Mining Applications
Whether you are mining and handling bauxite, coal, iron ore, gold ore, copper ore, silver ore, uranium, limestone, shale, etc. you most likely appreciate that a change in moisture content, time storage of the solid at rest, or variation in particle size fraction can drastically alter the reliability of material flow through your system. For example, due to the crushing of run-of-mine product, solids which may have been relatively free-flowing at larger particle sizes can be difficult to handle after crushing. Flow problems such as arching and ratholing may result.

Most people know that bulk solids can exhibit different levels of cohesive strength (hence flow performance) as a function of moisture level, particle size, etc.; however, very few people or firms can accurately quantify this. Furthermore, the link between the solid's strength level and system design (bottom reclaim stockpiles, silos, dump hoppers, feed hoppers, etc.) is unknown to many people.

Jenike & Johanson can characterize your material over a range of critical parameters, and utilize this information to design equipment to provide reliable flow through your system. For example, knowing the strength, bulk density, and boundary friction of your material will allow us to scientifically design a 1,000 ton storage silo by a similar method to that of designing a 1 ton dump hopper, or a feed hopper beneath a stockpile. Our scientific methods also allow us to design interfaces between hoppers and feeders such that reliable flow exists, in addition to minimizing feeder loads and torque requirements while accurately determining feeder speeds.

If you are currently experiencing solids handling difficulties, Jenike & Johanson can help you eliminate them. Or, if you are developing a new process or plant, we can utilize our industry leading technology to help you avoid process upsets due to solids flow problems. The result: a higher efficiency solids handling process resulting in increased profits. So, contact us to discuss how your handling system can work to improve your bottom line.

Some mining problems we have analyzed/solutions we have provided:
  • Stockpile designs to maximize gravity reclaim live capacity
  • Minimized pluggages, wear, and dusting in transfer chutes
  • Prevented cohesive arching and ratholing problems in storage silos, dump hoppers, and gravity reclaim stockpile hoppers
  • Silo designs for extremely cohesive bulk solids
  • Hopper/feeder interface designs to minimize feeder torque
  • Ore pass designs to provide reliable flow

"Early attempts at designing and installing a system to feed iron ore calcine dust at high rates proved unsuccessful and resulted in surging and flooding [524K QuickTime video] - at times with sufficient vigor to squirt ore twenty five feet horizontal with only a one foot drop! Jenike & Johanson tested the ore, modeled the flow behavior and delivered a new design that not only allowed reliable feed, but without even needing sealing which resulted in a very economical system."

-G. B. Reed, Nickel-Iron Project Superintendent, Falconbridge Nickel Mines Ltd.

"The Cleveland Cliffs Iron Co., under a Bureau of Mines contract, has had material tested and a borehole and hopper system designed for the transport of dry retorted oil shale at 3000 tph to a depth of 2000 ft. by Jenike & Johanson. This system was designed using state-of-the-art methods."

- V. Rajaram, Mining Engineer at The Cleveland Cliffs Iron Co.
