Solve Solids Flow Problems in Bins and Hoppers
Why Is This Topic Important to Industry?

Handling or processing powders and bulk solids is fraught with problems, whether you are dealing with chemicals, plastics, pharmaceuticals, foods, metals, or one of myriad other materials. You can pay dearly in downtime, lost or out-of-spec product, decreased productivity, and startup delays. Most solids flow problems occur because of the usual methods of selecting standard equipment with little or no consideration to the particular material or operating environment. This topic is important to industry because methods are available to modify/design solids handling equipment to ensure uniform, reliable flow.

Tutorial Outline

In this one day (6 hr.) tutorial, we will cover:

  • Typical bulk solids flow problems in bins and hoppers
  • Results of flow problems
  • Flow patterns
  • Ways to characterize flow properties
  • How to measure wall friction
  • Determination of mass flow hopper angles
  • Effect of hopper geometry on mass flow angles
  • How to calculate outlet sizes needed to overcome arching and ratholing
  • Typical flow properties test report
  • Design example (both new bins and retrofits)
  • Attendees' questions
