SILO, FEEDER, AND CONVEYOR DESIGN FOR BULK MATERIAL HANDLING

At Jenike & Johanson, we provide a custom engineering approach that best suits your requirements. Whether the project goal is to obtain the functional design or assistance through the entire design cycle, we provide the services and skills necessary for successful project implementation.

FUNCTIONAL DESIGN

Our engineers have reviewed and designed thousands of powder and bulk solids storage, feed, convey, and processing systems. Every year they are involved in hundreds of these types of projects, providing functional design for the critical processing steps to ensure consistent, reliable product is produced by the process in the most practical manner.

After reviewing all the data and analyzing your bulk solid system’s constraints and the requirements for the operation, we will determine the most cost-effective processing method(s) to correct existing handling problems, as well as how to provide reliable flow in a new installation. Quite often analyses include computer modeling and simulation of:

  • Particle velocity within silos and bins
  • Chute flow dynamics and design
  • Feeder and conveyor design and interfacing
  • Two-phase solids-liquid/solids-gas flow behaviors
  • Blending dynamics
  • Limiting flow rates
  • Inventory analysis (by particle size distribution or composition)

  • Mass balances of size distributions through system
  • Mass flow and funnel flow behavior
  • Shear and consolidation pressures
  • Pneumatic conveying characteristics
  • Solids loading and structural response
  • Bin and silo vibrations
  • Drying, purging, stripping, and conditioning behavior in gravity driven processing vessels

Based on these analyses, our recommendations are presented in a comprehensive written report. Dimensioned concepts and options are shown in sketches, enabling quick reviews and approval.

Our design goals include providing solutions that:

  • Optimize material and energy use
  • Optimize safety and productivity

  • Maximize efficiency
  • Minimize cost

DETAIL DESIGN

diagramContracting the detailed design engineering services to us ensures that our recommendations are followed exactly, and that no seemingly minor detail that may affect material flow is overlooked. We have earned a reputation for quick response, fast turnaround, and the supply of dependable, quality designs with long life. We perform structural and mechanical calculations using our extensive proprietary and commercial software capabilities.

Our detail design approach combines the flowability design parameters from the flow property testing with the structural and mechanical design, thereby eliminating typical problems seen in solids handling projects when engineers specify equipment without complete understanding of the flowability of a material at actual process handling conditions.

Typical engineering details include:

  • Complete system and component dimensions
  • General arrangements
  • Materials of construction
  • Thicknesses and section views
  • Weld and/or joint callouts
  • Flange sizing and arrangement
  • Interior finish notes for fabrication/installation
  • Structure or major component weights
  • Reaction loads at equipment support points
  • Our goal is to provide complete, clear and reliable detail design drawings enabling your project to successfully implement reliable process technology.

"Jenike & Johanson is one of the best consulting firms in the field of powder technology today. Their engineers combine a deep knowledge of the fundamentals along with the practical know-how to put bin and hopper systems together. They know how to solve the differential equations of flow, and will climb into a bin full of powder to figure out what segregation phenomenon is at work."
