STRUCTURAL DESIGN OF SILOS FOR BULK SOLIDS
Unlike most structural systems where the components are designed for a single worst case scenario load, the design of structural components in storage systems is usually governed by a number of load patterns predominantly affecting one or more components at a time. Therefore, understanding the behavior of each structural component, as well as the loads affecting them, is essential to ensure their structural integrity.
We perform structural design calculations, stress analysis and fatigue analysis using our extensive proprietary and commercial software capabilities, such as:
- ANSYS®, ALGOR® Finite Element Analysis (FEA) packages
- AutoCAD® drawing package
- SolidWorks 3D CAD modeling package
We include the flowability parameters of the bulk solid, as determined through flow properties testing, in our structural designs. This approach eliminates typical problems seen in solids handling designs when the storage system is specified without a complete understanding of a material’s flowability.
Our engineers have the knowledge and experience to calculate various design loading conditions including:
- Bulk solids induced internal loading (mass flow, funnel flow, eccentric)
- External loading on silos: wind, seismic, ancillary equipment
- Internal loading due to gas pressure in silos
Typical structural / detailed engineering designs incorporate:
- General arrangements and complete dimensions
- Materials of construction, thicknesses and section views
- Weld and/or joint callouts, flange sizing
- Interior finish notes for fabrication/installation
- Reaction loads at equipment support points
Our goal is to provide complete, clear and reliable structural drawings enabling your project to successfully implement the design.
