Independent Peer Review Service for Bulk Solids Handling Systems
Jenike & Johanson of Tyngsborough, Massachusetts is pleased to announce its peer review service for bulk solids handling applications for a variety of industries and applications. A critical step in the design of bulk solids handling systems, a peer review is important when
- Redundancy in processing design is lacking
- Operation is related to public health and safety
- Using new technology or design methods
- Working with new or unique bulk solids
These types of situations requiring crucial performance and avoiding critical problems warrant the use of a peer review. Parties that can benefit include the operating company, major owner(s), operation insurer, main engineering firm, construction firm, and contract management firm. As an independent expert with no stake in the recommended outcome, Jenike & Johanson’s role in a solids handling peer review is to provide verification of:
- Bulk solids flow assumptions and influences of site process and ambient conditions
- Appropriate design procedures and analyses
- Attainment of client’s needs and specifications regarding bulk solids processing
- Feasibility and practicality of the process design
- Solids handling effects on process or equipment
The peer review service is performed after the design phase is complete to ensure no engineering mistakes are present and appropriate effort has been made to develop a safe and cost-effective design. Furthermore, Jenike & Johanson will review the design to make certain the intended production objectives will be met. Examples of components reviewed include stockpiles, silos, hoppers, feeders, chutes, blenders and more.
Jenike & Johanson’s peer review service typically takes two to four weeks to complete depending on the type of system being evaluated, whether it is a new or existing system, and whether an on site trip is required. A written report is provided. Applications and industries utilizing peer review include pharmaceutical, energy, utilities, chemical, plastics, food processing and more. For complete information, please contact Jenike & Johanson at mail10@jenike.com or via telephone at (978) 649-3300. Detailed information about this peer review service can be found at http://www.jenike.com/Services/Engineering/Peer-Review.html. Information on all services offered by Jenike & Johanson can be found at www.jenike.com.
Segregation mechanisms will be discussed, as well as practical methods available to minimise or eliminate any negative effects of segregation.
The course material is supplemented with practical examples to illustrate concepts taught.

"Solve Solids Flow Problems in Silos, Stockpiles, and Chutes”
– Sept. 9-10 & 13-14, Australia
This course provides participants with a fundamental grounding in the key areas of bulk solids handling equipment selection, design, and troubleshooting. Strategies for alleviating costly flow problems in silos, stockpiles, feeders, and transfer chutes are presented, as well as proven techniques to design solids handling equipment so that it operates efficiently, safely, and reliably from the start.
A review of bulk material flow fundamentals will be presented, including common flow problems, types of flow patterns in equipment and how flow properties of bulk solids are measured. Feeder design and troubleshooting techniques are also discussed.
The participant will learn how to design and solve problems with gravity reclaim stockpiles handling either coarse/free-flowing or cohesive bulk solids. Strategies for reliably and safely handling fine powders in silos will be presented, along with proven techniques for designing transfer chutes to prevent plugging, abrasive wear, dust generation and spillage.
Segregation mechanisms will be discussed, as well as practical methods available to minimise or eliminate any negative effects of segregation.
The course material is supplemented with practical examples to illustrate concepts taught.

Mixing and Blending of Powders
Obtaining a uniform blend of dry bulk solids is a problem faced daily by engineers and operators in industries as varied as pharmaceuticals, foods, plastics, and battery production.
Typically, selection of an industrial blender is not made based on scientific principles, rather, a blender is often chosen based on other factors, such as, equipment cost, relationship with a blending equipment supplier, or use of a previous model.
Although there are no first-principles mathematical solutions for selecting a blender, proven, practical guidelines do exist which aid in the process of selecting a blender vs. using a costly and time consuming trial-and-error approach.
Information provided by this lecture series can effectively help an engineer, formulator or plant operator with the mixing and blending fundamentals required to troubleshoot mixing difficulties or selection of equipment for a powder blending application
